A team of vets working with Sydney University have launched a survey of working dogs, the Kelpie, the Border Collie, and the Australian Cattle Dog are the principal working breeds as part of a study into the genetic characteristics of a 'really good dog', information provided by everyday people like you from handlers to breeders.

Jonathon Early is a vet and a PhD student working on the study and he's encouraging people to provide information on the naturally bred in traits they value like speed, stamina, agility, obedience, the ability to work the most difficult of stock, this will also cover breeding, training and performance for yard work and or paddock work.

The farm dog survey will collate what traits farmers value most in their working dogs. The ground breaking study aims to help mould the farm dog of the future to participate in the survey please follow this link.

Sweep's 3rd run out in a bigger paddock after 4 months off work!

Everyone is asking about where we got our temporary fence panels so that they can have their own sheep night pen or that they want to use the panels for their dogs.

The budget mesh panels are quite light plus the girls can easily handle the panels on their own. The mobile temporary fence panels are quite adequate for sheep and dogs, if you're looking for something a little more robust the try the Premium Mesh Panels

Please call them to confirm the price, as the price on their website seems to be for a container load, hence the term "prices from".

We shortened the legs to 80mm so to limit access to anything wanting to go under the panel. As per the image above we chose not to use the feet as that would raise up the panels so that anything could crawl under. Also they also sell heavy duty gal clamps from $2 + GST. There is a choice between 80mm and 100mm, we got the 80mm ones so we could limit the distance between panels. We used a cordless drill with a socket attached to assemble the clamps to the panels.

Introduction of new Herding rules for Queensland effective 26th March 2012

Gripping:
The current rules allowing gripping are inappropriate with the ever-increasing public and media scrutiny for a practice which is a recreational activity. The CCCQ Constitution and Rules support animal welfare as described in the more recent animal protection legislation and do not condone this behaviour.

This particular matter has been brought to the attention of the RSPCA who have written to the ANKC. In Queensland the DPI and Biosecurity Queensland are also monitoring many of our practices. Council noted that not one of the state herding rules review proposals had addressed the issue.

When a working dog has had different owners, they may have been given different commands. Opposite commands gain a different response. This can lead to a lot of frustration and you may be inclined to believe that your dog is disobeying you. Being aware of this possible issue, we humans can think around this and compensate for the differences quicker in a trial situation rather than expecting a dog to remember its new response to a command.
