James Mackenzie also known as 'Jock' and 'Mac' to his mates was imprisoned on a charge of stealing 1000 sheep from the Levels Station in 1855. He denied the theft of 1000 sheep, claiming that he had been hired by John Mossman to drive the sheep to Otago, he was charged then pardoned in January 1856.
He was the first European to discover the now known, *Mackenzie Pass* and the *Mackenzie Basin*, and the *Lindis Pass*, county area are now known as Mackenzie.
Mackenzie continaully escaped captivity and on this last evasion they suspect he escaped to Australia.
Over time his life became a legend in which his enduring strength and mystical Border Collie made him an extraordinary stockman.
